Sunday classes start begin at 4 pm with Pilates for Fencers. This optional half hour exercise program is designed to develop the core muscles and flexibility needed for fencing. It is especially important for rapier, as the postures tend to be more strenuous than other weapon styles.
At 4:30 we begin the rapier class. A rapier is a long, one-handed weapon that can cut but is optimized for the thrust. Generally considered a civilian’s weapon, elaborate rapiers were often worn by both the noble and merchant classes.
For the basics we’ll be drawing heavily from L’Ange’s Lessons on the Thrust. This 1664 manual echoes the teachings of Fabris, Capoferro, and Giganti; but presents it in an easier to follow format.
Once you’ve mastered the basics, you’ll be encouraged to focus on a specific style. This will be your opportunity to explore these historic manuals both alone and with the group.
Equipment we provide
Plastic chest protector*
Equipment you must purchase
Groin protection (men only, required for all contact drills)
